Hops are in the blood of Bale Breaker Brewing owners Kevin Smith and Meghann Quinn. Descendants of hop-growers who planted in Yakima Valley in 1932, the sibling duo teamed up with Quinn’s husband Kevin and family friend Jon Mullen to start Bale Breaker, officially opening last month. With only two beers on tap, Bale Breaker has acquired quite the following already, greatly due to friends and fans in Seattle and beyond who tasted the beers at the Yakima’s Fresh Hop Ale Festival last fall. The Field 41 Pale Ale lives up to the buzz — with only 4.5% ABV at that. Full of green, herbal and citrus hop aromas with a smooth mouthfeel and a bitter crispness, this is a beer you want to sip on while on your back porch, staring out at your hop field on a warm May day.
